El puertorriqueño William Omar Landrón, "Don Omar", es considerado el artista más popular de reggaetón urbano. Recientemente logró obtener un disco de Platino por su producción ‘The Last Don Live', lanzado en el 2005 por el sello VI Music. Don Omar comenzó a desarrollarse a muy temprana edad, perteneciendo a varios grupos de hip hop, incluyendo los Christian Rappers. Su pasión por la música lo llevó a participar en más de 20 discos, convirtiéndolo en uno de los artistas más productivos del mundo.

Don Omar logró obtener reconocimiento internacional con su tema ‘Dale Don Dale'. Esta canción formó parte de ‘Los MVP's', album que vendió sobre 100,000 unidades y creó una inmensa base de fanáticos, no sólo en Puerto Rico, sino también en Estados Unidos y varios países de Sur América.

Continuando con su éxito ‘Dale Don Dale' Don Omar dio a conocer ‘The Last Don', el cual precipitó su carrera con éxitos como ‘Dile', ‘Pobre Diabla' y muchos otros. ‘The Last Don' llegó a vender sobre 500,000 copias y no sólo recibió el reconocimiento de los críticos, sino que logró los premios ‘Producción Pop Latino del Año' y ‘Producción Rap/Hip Hop Latino del Año' en los premios Billboard Latin Music Awards en el ano 2004. En esta premiación también recibió el premio ‘Artista Revelación del Año'. El reconocimiento fue un pilar para Don Omar, su sello discográfico VI Music y su equipo de manejo. Este álbum logró convertir a Don Omar en un reconocido artista internacional.

"The Last Don Live" es el resultado de una excelente colaboración que logró, a sólo cuatro meses en el mercado, la venta total de dos conciertos masivos en el Coliseo Roberto Clemente (uno de los más importantes escenarios de San Juan, Puerto Rico).

Esta magna producción logró la unión de más de catorce músicos bajo la dirección de Eduardo Reyes, quien ha compuesto temas para muchos artistas internacionales como Melina León, Jyve 5 y Christian Castro. Por primera vez en la historia del Reggaetón, la grabación usó instrumentos en vez de solamente ritmos electrónicas. Inclusive el cubano americano Emilio Estefan, uno de los productores más importantes de la industria, le produjo ‘Carta a un Amigo'. El álbum incluye temas como "Dale Don Dale," "Aunque te Fuiste," "Guayaquil," "Asi Soy," y "Pobre Diabla." También incluye la participación de otros grandes artistas como el legendario cantante de salsa puertorriqueño Andy Montanez, Glory, Tego Calderón, Gallego, y Héctor y Tito ("Los Bambinos").

Esta producción logró además dar a conocer a Don Omar como solista y le permitió expandir de gran manera su fanaticada.

Don Omar ha estado envuelto en importantes proyectos como "Grayskull" ("Te estas Calentando"), "The Godfather" ("Dejala"), "Da Flex" ("Acorralala"), y "Unwrapped" ("Tu Fotografia"), Más Flow ("Entre tu y yo"), por mencionar algunos. El afamado intérprete también ha colaborado con figuras como Gloria Estefan, Jennifer López, Aventura, Pilar Montenegro, Andy Montañez, Franky J., y Los Rabanes. De igual Don Omar ha logrado un impacto significativo en el mercado de habla hispana, participando en tres conciertos vendidos completamente en diferentes estados de las Islas Canarias (sobre 31,000 fanáticos).
Don ha impactado mucho más que el ambiente del reggaetón, y es que ha logrado una alianza con la marca de fútbol UMBRO, reconocida a nivel mundial. Con ésta ha lanzado al mercado la colección de ropa casual de Don Omar, primera línea de ropa urbana lanzada por un artista latino. Esta marca está siendo distribuida por las tiendas Foot Locker tanto en Estados Unidos como en Puerto Rico. Don Omar y UMBRO comenzaron su sociedad en el mes de noviembre del 2004, como parte del intento del artista de utilizar su creatividad para crear una linea de ropa que mejor capturara y representara la energía del Reggaetón y su estilo de vida urbano. Esta nueva etapa en la carrera de Don Omar tiene un significado especial para éste, ya que tras lograr extraordinarias ventas con su primer línea de ‘tennis', éste entendió que el lanzamiento crearía un impacto significativo en su fundación ‘STARS'. Esta fundación fue creada por el artista en el 2004 como una organización sin fines de lucro en donde se pudiera ayudar a niños con autismo. Ganancias obtenidas por su segundo lanzamiento de ‘tennis' serán donadas a la organización.

Don Omar continúa expandiendo el reconocimiento del género del Reggaetón, al ser uno de los pocos intérpretes del género en lograr giras mundiales por algunas de las más grandes ciudades de Europa, Estados Unidos y Centro América.

El año 2005 fue un ano lleno de retos y satisfacciones para este gran artista. Su producción ‘Bandoleros', la primera de su propio sello All Star Records', fue todo un éxito de ventas y difusión radial. En noviembre de dicho año el sello Universal Records lanza la producción ‘Da Hitman', la cual rompió records de ventas desde su primera semana en el mercado. Esta producción contiene una compilación de los éxitos más importantes de Don Omar, remixes, y participaciones artísticas de artistas como Fat Joe, N.O.R.E., Mr. Vega, Fabulous, Cuban Link, Tego Calderón, Jennifer López, y muchos más.

Durante el verano del 2005 Don Omar participa en una gira de un mes completo por las plazas principales de Europa, incluyendo Francia, Alemania, Italia, Turkia, Holanda, Bélgica y Suiza, entre otras.

Otros grandes logros en la carrera del artista durante este año fueron las participaciones artísticas en eventos como los MTV Video & Music Awards, los Grammy Awards y Premios Lo Nuestro. En este último logra ser galardonado como ‘Artista Urbano del Año'. Más adelante también es invitado de manera especial para participar del programa del reconocido jugador de soccer argentino, ‘Diego Maradona's TV Show'.

Durante el mes de mayo de este lanza al mercado su más completa producción discográfica, ‘King of Kings', la cual salió al mercado con una preventa de medio millón de unidades. Este nuevo proyecto, que salió al mercado bajo los sellos VI Music / Machete Music, presenta pegajosos ritmos de ‘dance hall', merengue, bachata, ‘reggae roots' y balada que son enmarcados con el reggaetón único de Don Omar y que lo ha proclamado como el artista más popular y completo de la música urbana.

El primer corte en promoción del disco lo fue el súper éxito radial ‘Angelito'. El mismo sigue dominando las principales posiciones de difusión radial a nivel mundial. Otros de los temas que trae el Rey del Reggaetón lo son ‘Repórtense', ‘Muñecas de Porcelana', ‘Bajo la Luna', ‘Salió el Sol', y ‘Conteo'. Este último tema formó parte de la banda sonora del filme de hollywood ‘The Fast and The Furious 3' y del cual se realizó un video clip para promocionar la taquillera. El disco cuenta además con la participación estelar de artistas como Juelz Santana, Zion, Miri Ben-Arie, Beenie Man, y Mackie Ranks.

"King of Kings" es la evolución del Reggaetón: música, sentimiento, fusiones y diversos ritmos que hacen de esta producción la más completa del año.

Actualmente el artista se encuentra realizando una gira de presentaciones y promocionando su producción. Con esta gira ha visitado infinidad de países como Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Perú, España, Londres, Roma, México y Korea del Sur. Fue precisamente en este último donde visitó varias bases militares norteamericanas, compartiendo de cerca e interpretando sus temas a los soldados allí presentes.

Don Omar continuará su gira de conciertos de costa a costa por los Estados Unidos y culminará con una magna presentación en su natal Puerto Rico, en donde lleva más de un año sin presentarse masivamente.

King of Kings is clearly triumphant: it received a 2006 Latin Grammy nomination for "Best Urban Music Album," maintained the number one spot on Billboard's "Top Latin Albums" chart for 15 consecutive weeks, debuted at #7 on Billboard's "Top 200," and has already sold well over 500,000 copies worldwide. "Angelitos," the first single from the album, reached #1 on the Billboard Latin Charts. The album has also held the highest position ever by an urban artist on Spain's sales charts, and "Angelitos" held the number one most downloaded ringtone spot in Spain.
Don Omar is one of those dynamic voices that seem to rise above the rest. Although he is the king of reggaetón, he sees himself as a constant innovator and a versatile Urban Latin artist. He is a top-flight rapper who can hold his own with anyone in terms of flow, but he is also a devotee of melody, harmony, the use of real instrumentation, and the spectacle of a live show. He loves and draws influence from salsa, merengue, bachata, bolero, and even rock. Now, with his new album, Don Omar puts it all together: he raps, he dances, he sings, and he ascends to take his rightful place on the throne.
King of Kings is building on the impressive foundation set by Don Omar's previous albums, "The Last Don" and "The Last Don Live," which sold over 1 million copies combined worldwide. He was the first reggaetón rapper to sell out Puerto Rico's Roberto Clemente Coliseum and has enjoyed success touring throughout Europe and Latin America. He has received such prestigious awards as "Latin Pop Album of the Year" and "Best New Artist" from the Billboard Latin Music Awards in 2004, and was nominated for a 2006 American Music Award for "Favorite Latin Artist." His song "Dale Don Dale" is a calling card for reggaetón fans worldwide.
For Don Omar, music was something he had to struggle to get involved with. Born and raised in an urban ghetto in metropolitan San Juan, Don Omar, née William Omar Landrón, always had a touch of musical royalty in his blood. "My grandfather was a musician," he said, "But I was so rebellious when I was young that I saw music as something imposed by my grandfather and that everyone in the house had to be a musician, too."
Don Omar grew up in Villa Palmeras, a rough section of the San Juan area, where at age seven, he saw the first murder of his life. He moved on to what he described as a "problematic adolescence." A close friend was killed before his eyes during a shootout, and he made the decision to get involved with a church in nearby Bayamón.
"Everything started to change," said Don Omar, who formed a Christian rap band with people he met at the church. "I was in the chorus for three years. That's where I started to take music classes and find a taste for music."
By the age of 21, Don Omar was collaborating with a pastor of a church with 800 members. People were attracted to the church because of his band and doors began to open. Suddenly Don Omar had become a reggaetón artist. He started to sing with MC Yaga (of Yaga & Mackie fame). "My circle of friends was Yaga, Master Joe, DJ Frank," said Don Omar.
In the early years of this decade, Don Omar began to collaborate with artists in compilations albums, and then he met stars of the moment, Héctor and Tito, who asked him to write lyrics for their smash 2002 album "A la Reconquista." Juan Vidal, president of their label VI Music recognized Omar's talent and got him involved with more compilations, and he began to work with established stars like Tempo and Daddy Yankee.
Don Omar has always been a lover of poetry and ballads, and during this time he wrote a song called "Muñecas de Porcelana," and presented it to a company executive, who made the final decision to sign him to a contract. "I have a rocker's soul," said Don Omar. "And I told them, ‘I brought you a song that's not reggaetón, so how are you going to sign me?' And they said, ‘we'll make it work.'"
The rest, of course, was history. "The Last Don" became one of the most important early reggaetón albums; Don Omar's historic two-night stand at the Roberto Clemente coliseum made promoters take the genre seriously, and a concert at Ponce's legendary Tuque drag-racing spot drew over 100,000 fans. A new genre was born.
"Muñecas de Porcelana," a song about two women in love, finally made it onto King of Kings, and it's a statement about Don Omar's commitment to openness and truth as well as his desire to expand the boundaries of the genre. "I wanted to show more lyrics, more melody, work with the ear of the fans," said Don Omar.
King of Kings does feature its share of ballads, like "Muñecas," "Tu No Sabes," "Angelitos," and "Infieles." But that doesn't mean that Don Omar stops rocking out to reggaetón's seductive dance rhythm. Hard-driving tracks like "Conteo" and "Bailando Sola" get you bumping and grinding across the dance floor.
The king of reggaetón doesn't forget his bachata fixation, which he exploits on "Cuéntale," and he also fuses with Middle Eastern beats on "Ojitos Chiquitos. A raw electric guitar riff frames the sensual "Candela," telling the story about the girl with the perfect body. The album also includes collaborations MCs Juelz Santana, Beanie Man, and Zion.
In late 2005, Don Omar moved to New York, where he recorded King of Kings, collaborating mostly with his old producer friend Eliel. "New York is that one place where you have to look at everything twice, or three times, or four," said Don Omar. "It challenges me, asking me ‘Do you really want to do this? Do you really want to cross that line?"
He dreams of some day collaborating with musicians like Manu Chao, or La Oreja de Van Gogh, or acting in film. At the end of the day, Don Omar knows it's good to be king. "I've had to destroy my past so I could say, ‘I'm still here." Today I have more desire to live after all that has happened," he said. "I just want to be who I am."
